Florece en Jardín Botánico de la UNAM, pescadillo o tehuizote
- En su totalidad podría tener 50 mil flores, que al abrir son blancas con tonalidades verdes, pero que con el paso de los días se tornan amarillas y hasta naranjas
- A partir de su floración comienza su proceso de muerte, que concluirá en aproximadamente un año
Hace unos días, en el Jardín Botánico del Instituto de Biología de la UNAM tiene lugar un espectáculo hermoso y excepcional: después de alrededor de tres décadas de espera, un magnífico ejemplar de pescadillo o tehuizote, llamado por los indígenas oaxaqueños como “yacktobiyack” o “yahuindayashi”, por fin ha dado flores.
Ahora, como una bella forma de concluir su vida, este pariente del agave también ha comenzado su lenta agonía, proceso que concluirá con su muerte total en aproximadamente un año.
Pero Furcraea longaeva, como la conocen los científicos,no es una especie de agavácea más: es una de las monocotiledóneas de más larga vida en el mundo, y en su hábitat natural –crece entre dos mil 200 y tres mil 100 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en las montañas de la Mixteca Alta, Sierra Madre del Sur y Sierra Juárez de Oaxaca, y una pequeña porción del estado de Puebla– pueden pasar hasta 100 años para que madure y fructifique.
En Ciudad Universitaria, el tallo de la planta mide 2.5 metros y la inflorescencia o quiote tiene una longitud de cinco metros, pero en la naturaleza la altura total puede ser hasta de nueve o 12 metros. La inflorescencia es de contorno piramidal y en la base mide 70 centímetros de circunferencia y alcanzó su altura total en sólo un mes.
Tiene 46 “ramas”, las más largas superan un metro de largo, y en cada una entre 500 y mil flores. En su totalidad podría tener 50 mil flores, que al abrir son blancas con tonalidades verdes, pero que con el paso de los días se tornan amarillas y hasta naranjas.
Abisaí Josué García Mendoza, curador de la Colección Nacional de Agaves del Jardín Botánico, recordó que él mismo llevó la planta a ese espacio universitario en 1993, cuando tenía un metro de alto y probablemente entre 10 y 20 años de edad. Ahí, es la tercera vez que florece un ejemplar de Furcraea, pero las anteriores fueron de otras especies: Furcraea martinezii y Furcraea macdougallii, aunque esta última se cayó debido a vientos fuertes y “no tuvimos la fortuna de tener flores bien desarrolladas ni frutos”.
Belleza endémica de larga historia
Furcraea es un género que contiene aproximadamente 25 especies, 12 presentes en México. Furcraea longaeva es endémica de Oaxaca y el Valle de Tehuacán-Cuicatlán, en la Sierra Madre del Sur, explicó el experto.
Además de su longevidad, se distingue porque a diferencia de otras especies de su género el pescadillo sólo se reproduce de manera sexual. Otras lo hacen de forma asexual, mediante bulbilos, que son pequeñas plantitas que nacen en las ramas de la inflorescencia.
No se conoce a los polinizadores del tehuizote, “pero suponemos que podrían ser los insectos, quizá palomillas nocturnas”; ya fertilizadas dan origen a los frutos y las semillas, que en este caso madurarían hasta fin de este año o principios del siguiente, para ser conservadas y propagadas también en otros jardines botánicos.
“Como la planta está fuera del lugar donde crece naturalmente, esperamos que llegue a dar algunos frutos. A lo largo del día, principalmente en la mañana, la visitan colibrís, mariposas y abejas, a pesar de que produce muy poco néctar, y podrían fertilizarla”, relató.
“Yacktobiyack” o “yahuindayashi” fue colectada por primera vez en 1829. En 1832 fue descrita por Joseph Gerhald Zuccarini, profesor de la Universidad de Múnich.
Durante mucho tiempo se desconoció de dónde procedía exactamente la planta con la que se describió la especie, sólo se mencionaba que había sido colectada en el “monte Tanga”, Oaxaca. Fue hasta hace alrededor de una década que “leyendo la obra que sobre ese estado escribió Eduard Mühlenpfordt encontré que ubicaba ese sitio a cuatro leguas de Teotitlán del Valle. Fue un gusto conocer la localidad tipo, la original donde fue colectada por primera vez”.
El universitario visitó las poblaciones de origen durante varios años, sin suerte de verlas en flor, hasta 1996, cuando florecieron cientos de ejemplares.
La floración de Furcraea longaeva en el Jardín Botánico llega en un momento inesperado, porque el ejemplar es aún muy joven. Esto ocurrió por las condiciones idóneas que ahí existen, en donde las plantas están protegidas y no les falta agua, dijo García Mendoza.
“La energía del tallo y las hojas, el agua y las sustancias de reserva que almacenó durante toda su vida, le sirven para culminar su última etapa. Posiblemente tengamos poco más de una semana con este estado de reproducción”, concluyó. Para atestiguar este milagro de la naturaleza, las visitas al Jardín Botánico son de lunes a viernes de 9:00 a 16:30 horas, y sábados de 9:00 a 15:00.
